1991-92ம் வருடங்களில், ஒரு டெஸ்ட் மேட்ச் விளையாடுவதற்கு ஊதியமாக எங்களுக்கு ரூபாய் 10,000 வழங்கப்படுவது வழக்கம். ஒருமுறை கல்கத்தாவில் நடந்த ஒரு போட்டியின்போது அப்படி எனக்குக் கிடைத்த பணத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, அன்னை தெரசாவைக் கட்டாயம் சந்திக்கவேண்டும்.. அவர் செய்துவரும் தன்னலமற்ற சேவைக்காக அவருக்கு இந்தப் பணத்தைக் கொடுத்தேயாகவேண்டும்” என்று எனக்குள் ஓர் உந்துதல் ஏற்பட்டு, அவ்வாறே அவரது ஆசிரமத்துக்குச் சென்றேன். “Sisters of Charity” என்ற அந்த அலுவலகம் மிகச்சிறியதாய் இருந்தது. அங்கே இருந்த கன்னியாஸ்திரிகளிடம் ‘Where is Mother?’ என்று கேட்டேன். அதற்கு அங்கே இருந்த ஒரு கன்னியாஸ்திரி, ‘Mother is at the ‘Home for the dying’ என்றார். எனக்கு ‘Home for the dying’ என்று அவர் கூறியதன் பொருள் விளங்கவில்லை. அவர்கள் என்னை அந்த அலுவலகத்தின் பின்புறம் இருந்த ஒரு கட்டிடத்துக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றனர். அந்தக் கட்டிடத்தினுள் தங்களது வாழ்வின் கடைசி மணித்துளிகளை எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருக்கும், மரணப்படுக்கையில் இருக்கும் நோயாளிகள் தங்கவைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தனர். நான் உள்ளே நுழைந்தபோது அந்த கட்டிடத்தினுள்ளிருந்து ஒரு சகிக்க இ...
